JOHN MIKEL OBI RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has announced his retirement from international football. The midfielder who has played for all the Nigerian national team announced his retirement today after leading the Super Eagles to third place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Mikel announced his retirement from international football with these words on his Instagram handle saying.

Mikel made his debut for Nigeria in the 2005 U-20 Youth Championship, leading the Flying Eagles to second place in the Competition and being named the second best player in the tournament behind Lionel Messi.

Mikel made his senior debut for the National team aged 18, against Libya on 17 August 2005. He made his first senior tournament appearance for the Super Eagles in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt where Nigeria finished third place.

Finishing at where he started, Mikel Obi made his final tournament appearance for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations where Nigeria finished in third place again.

But in between those two tournaments, Mikel Obi has led Nigeria to two World Cup appearances in the Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018. The Super Eagles bowed out at the Round of 16 in the former, losing out in extra time to France, whilst being booted out in the Group stages at the latter edition.

He’s also led the Nigerian Olympic team to a Bronze medal position in the 2016 Olympic games and featured in 5 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2019. He won the ultimate with the Super Eagles in 2013 where he was a key member of the squad.

Mikel has featured in total 89 games for the Super Eagles, scoring 6 goals and delivering 12 assists. With one African Cup trophy, an U-20 World Cup silver medal, an Olympic bronze medal and three African Cup bronze medals under his belt, Mikel Obi bows out in glamorous style aged 32.
